Jeffrey Sachs On Indonesia: Dictatorship to Democracy Overnight “It is not fair to compare Indonesia with it’s neighboring countries such as Singapore and Malaysia, or any other country in the world in that case. Indonesia has changed from a totally centralized country to a decentralized country virtually overnight. Indonesia has changed from a Dictatorship to a Democracy virtually overnight. Indonesia has changed to a liberal country virtually overnight. No other country has been through what Indonesia has been through virtually overnight. The closest example is the USSR. When the USSR split up, it experienced similar changes to what Indonesia had, virtually overnight. In that condition, Russia’s economy had a NEGATIVE growth that year. In that same condition, Indonesia’s Economy GREW. It had POSITIVE growth. If I were an Indonesian, I would be proud of that achievement. And I would predict a much brighter future”. Popularity: 2% [?] That's amazing for a big country. That's all I have to say. Posted via web from Justin Lee's posterous |

My baby sitters
The lovely auntie and uncle who baby sat me when I was a little boy more than 25yrs ago! They still look the same. Was so happy to bump into them at the mall. I think they're very happy to see me too. So many challenges in life but when you think about it it's moments like these which make my heart fill with nostalgia. People come and go in my life but I don't think my baby sitters will ever leave mine because they brought me up and taught me so much during my formative years. Putting me in the right trajectory was all they were required to do and they did that right with their caring hearts. How could I ever thank them? Indeed these are the people who sweated and toiled to bring us up. They built this city that we've all come to enjoy.

APEC delegates only come for Teh Tarik... We have to manage the attractiveness of the tea break against the rest of the meeting. Sometimes, you find that the teh tarik stall out in the reception area is so attractive that they don't want to go back to the meeting. We have to manage that. $100m conference... and people seem to care more about the Teh Tarik. Posted via web from Justin Lee's posterous |

Swamp in Singapore City
Think you'll never find a swamp in our city? I found one about 15mins walk from my place. It's really prehistoric looking and untouched. Very interesting as this is not a real forest area. This place is just 5 mins walk from alexandra hospital. totally untouched by our meticulous urban planners.

E-commerce Fever Makes Taobao China’s Newest Internet Darling - NYTimes.com Here in Yiwu, which claims to be the site of the world’s biggest wholesale market, Taobao has started to change the look of Yiwu Industrial and Commercial College. The school’s vice dean, Jia Shaohua, points out an area designated as a start-up site for students seeking to get rich. He points to students taking orders by computer, packaging products, sorting inventory and taking photos of the items for display online, then adds, “Around the school now, there is a whole Taobao industrial chain.” Rocking story on the TaoBao ecommerce story... And its really interesting how the Yiwu Industrial and Commercial College is really being entrepreneurial. I guess it's great to be in school right next to a commercial centre. Who needs jobs to be created in China? Entepreneurial spirit is what matters! Posted via web from Justin Lee's posterous |
